Program Description: Perry Youth Basketball is a recreational youth basketball league serving boys and girls in the community of Perry. The focus of our offerings is to teach the participants the fundamentals of basketball including shooting, passing, dribbling and team work.  In addition to skill development, emphasis will be placed on good sportsmanship.  Being part of a team provides participants the opportunity for social development as they meet new friends and learn how to interact positively with others in a team environment. Volunteer coaches will focus on age appropriate basketball instruction.
*Participant Expectations: upon registering your child, you are committing to attend all practices/games. While we understand that conflicts may arise that prohibit your child from attending all practices/games, we do expect that all absences be communicated in a timely manner to the team coach and or recreation department.
*Coaching: Volunteer coaches staff our youth basketball league teams. Effective volunteer coaches fully support a positive youth sports philosophy in their attitude and behavior before, during and after practices/games. Coaches will help participants learn skills, discuss fair play and most of all, have fun.
Interested volunteer coaches should contact Perry Rec for additional information. All volunteers are required to fill out a Coach Application and are subject to a background check.
*Practices: days/times will be set by coaches/recreation department prior to the start of the program. Teams will typically have 1 week night practice; additional practices/clinics may be offered on Saturdays prior to the start of games.
*Games: Saturday game times range from early 8:30am through mid afternoon start times. Weeknight games (Monday-Friday) will typically start at 6pm or 7pm. All division 1 & 2 games will be held in Perry; Division 3 games will be played in Perry or PCYB.

Physical Fitness
Children ages 5+ require at least one hour of moderate-intensity physical activity every day. Learning basketball allows children to incorporate frequent physical activity into their daily routines and contributes to overall physical well-being and fitness. In addition to basketball practices, kids can practice at home to stay active.
Motor Skills
Learning to play basketball involves dribbling, throwing, catching and pivoting. Beginning basketball training at a young age improves gross motor skills by using major muscle groups. Young children who play basketball improve flexibility and endurance. Your child will also benefit from improved fine motor skills, such as hand-eye coordination. These motor skills transfer to other activities of daily life.
Psychological Development
Becoming involved with basketball at an early age helps kids develop psychologically. Playing on a team allows your child to make friends and feel involved with her peer group. Team sports also improve a child's ability to communicate and solve basic problems. Experiencing the benefits and difficulties of healthy competition at a young age prepare children for the many challenges they will face throughout life. Basketball teaches children social skills and coping strategies that are useful at school, home and in peer relationships.
The program will begin in mid to late November with group skills clinics.
Team practices are expected to begin the week of December 3rd.
The program will take a break that coincides with the Perry Local Schools Winter break schedule.
 The program is expected to conclude in mid to late February.
